Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?
SDF is a liquid medication made of:
- Silver, which kills harmful bacteria
- Fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel
It is painted onto decayed areas of the tooth to stop cavities from getting worse, without drilling or needles.

What to Expect
The process is simple:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried.
- SDF is brushed onto the decayed area.
- The liquid dries in seconds and starts working immediately.
Important Information
- Staining: SDF will turn the decayed area dark brown or black as it works. This is normal and shows the cavity has been treated. Healthy tooth structure is not stained.
- Appearance vs. health: While it changes the colour of the decay, it helps preserve the tooth and avoid more invasive treatment. Until further treatment can be achieved
