Continence Treatment and Promotion Service

What does this service provide?

The Continence service provides a comprehensive, evidence based service based on individualised assessments to treat and manage bladder and bowel dysfunction.

A Continence Specialist Nurse:
  • Provides support for people with continence concerns registered with a GP in North East Hampshire, Farnham and Surrey Heath
  • Provides information, education and support
  • Delivers bladder retraining advice in clinics
  • Provides information, and education and assists with decision making process with a treatment plan
  • Provides a TWOC clinic for patients who can attend appointments at Farnham Hospital
  • Provides a pathway of care for patients
  • Can refer to the appropriate members of the health care team and social team as required
  • Provides information, education and support for professionals supporting people with continence concerns
  • Provides complex bowel and bladder assessment and management such as trans anal irrigation, Intermittent self-catheterisation, continence products for urinary maintenance & catheterisation

How to access the service?

Anyone with a continence concern can access the service with a referral from your doctor, consultant or any health care practitioner.

Once we have received your referral from your GP or consultant the Continence Specialist Nurse will carry out a triage of your needs over the telephone and assess your needs.

After the telephone triage an appointment will be made to be seen in clinic.

Appointment Information

The Continence Specialist Nurse will introduce their staff and their role and find out from you:

  • A history of your continence and any events that have made it worse
  • Your past medical history
  • Medication taken
  • Bladder diary will be discussed
  • Bowel chart will be discussed
  • A urine sample will be checked and a bladder scan carried out to check residual volume
  • After the initial assessment agreed actions and outcomes planned
  • Agree when you will be seen next
