Knocked Out a Tooth

Don’t panic – quick action can save your tooth.
Follow these simple steps to give your tooth the best chance of survival.

Step 1: Pick the Tooth Up by the Crown Only

  • That’s the white part you normally see in your mouth.
  • Do NOT touch the root (the pointed part that was inside the gum).

Step 2: Clean the Tooth

  • If it’s dirty, lick it clean or rinse it quickly with cold water.
  • Do NOT scrub the tooth or use any soap or chemicals.

Step 3: Put the Tooth Back in Its Socket (Adult Teeth Only)

  • Gently push it back into the correct position in the gum.
  • Only do this with adult (permanent) teeth. Never try to reinsert a baby tooth.

Step 4: Hold It in Place

  • Bite down gently on a clean handkerchief, cloth, or gauze to keep the tooth in position.

Step 5: Go to the Dentist Immediately

  • The sooner you’re seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
  • Call your dentist straight away.
  • Out of hours? Head to your nearest A&E department or call NHS 111

Can’t Put the Tooth Back In?

If you’re unable to reinsert the tooth:

  • Place it in a container of cold milk
  • Do NOT store it in water
  • Keep it moist and go straight to the dentist
  • Time is critical – ideally within 30 minutes
  • Always get dental advice as soon as possible after an injury
