Knocked Out a Tooth
Don’t panic – quick action can save your tooth.
Follow these simple steps to give your tooth the best chance of survival.
Step 1: Pick the Tooth Up by the Crown Only
- That’s the white part you normally see in your mouth.
- Do NOT touch the root (the pointed part that was inside the gum).
Step 2: Clean the Tooth
- If it’s dirty, lick it clean or rinse it quickly with cold water.
- Do NOT scrub the tooth or use any soap or chemicals.
Step 3: Put the Tooth Back in Its Socket (Adult Teeth Only)
- Gently push it back into the correct position in the gum.
- Only do this with adult (permanent) teeth. Never try to reinsert a baby tooth.
Step 4: Hold It in Place
- Bite down gently on a clean handkerchief, cloth, or gauze to keep the tooth in position.
Step 5: Go to the Dentist Immediately
- The sooner you’re seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
- Call your dentist straight away.
- Out of hours? Head to your nearest A&E department or call NHS 111

If you’re unable to reinsert the tooth:
- Place it in a container of cold milk
- Do NOT store it in water
- Keep it moist and go straight to the dentist
- Time is critical – ideally within 30 minutes
- Always get dental advice as soon as possible after an injury
